The Chapel of La Merced, a hidden Miami treasure is located in Allapattah behind Corpus Christi Church: a jewel of Baroque art and architecture, completed fourteen years ago by local artisans under the leadership of Corpus Christi’s Father Jose Luis Menendez. It includes one of the most important collections of Spanish-colonial art in North America. The chapel also includes a grand piano and handcrafted harpsichord used for concerts.
On October 3, FANs enjoyed a private tour led by Carol Damian, art curator for the chapel and a FAN member. She is a former Professor of Art History, and Director and Chief Curator of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University. Carol explained the architectural elements and pointed out details of the many paintings and artifacts — especially of the Cusco school.
FAN members also got to see two restorers working on elements of the chapel. A new carved-wood ceiling will be added by the beginning of next year.
Lunch followed at Palmar restaurant in Wynwood, where FANs took over the entire restaurant for a delicious Chinese meal.
Thanks to hosts Betty Wohl and Naomi Honig, and to Carol Damien, for a special day.
