FANs attended the premier of Robert Battle’s new work, Awakening, Thursday, February 18, at the Adrienne Arsht Center, Miami.
The irresistible dancers of Alvin Ailey were back after a two-year absence with a dazzling array of offerings including a world premiere by Miami native, Artistic Director Robert Battle, co-commissioned by the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 10@10 series, and funded by FAN.
Battle uses his taut, ritualistic style to powerful effect in this dance that expertly balances chaos and resolution, dissonance and harmony. Awakening, his first new work since becoming artistic director in 2011, is set to a symphonic score by frequent collaborator John Mackey.
The Company’s all-star lineup also included new works, as well as Ailey classics such as the perennial crowd-pleaser Revelations, which closes every performance.
Dinner before was at Morgan’s Restaurant, a lovely way to begin the evening.
FAN hosts were Alison Williams and Naomi Honig.
